Canceled cake

Ace of cakes was really fun and interesting when it first started; but like all good food this show's gone a little stale. After 10 seasons the Food Network has decided to cancel the series. They claim they are looking for other opportunities for Duff Goldman, the owner of Charm City Cakes in Baltimore and the personality of the show.

The final season will begin airing in January.

Have you seen this guy (drive)?

I always told you I watch a diverse bevy of TV shows; and I've never apologized. My lineup just got stranger as I've become fascinated with MTV's Megadrive.

Host Johnny Pemberton is slowly gaining notoriety. He's a comic and actor and recently made an appearance on Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I'm not sure how he landed this odd hosting gig on MTV; but the dude is pretty funny and he has no shame at all.

Each episode Johnny starts off by destroying a smart car and then introduces us to a some kind of behemoth machine or a really sweet sports car in which he attempts to drive.

Okay, it might not sound that entertaining; but it is because the whole time you are clenching your jaw thinking please don't destroy that car, truck, giant motorcycle or backhoe you're driving. In the intro to the show Pemberton states he failed his driver's test three times and often lies to his car insurance company. I hope MTV has good insurance!

If you like to watch destruction with a dash of humor Megadrive is just the show you're looking for.

Palin hits primetime

Just when you thought reality TV couldn't get any worse TLC gives Sarah 'You Betcha' Palin her own show.

Thats's right. Sarah Palin's Alaska debuted in the primetime rotation this week to some of TLC's biggest ratings (post John and Kate).

The 8-hour series follows Sarah, Todd and their brood as they partake in adventures in the great Alaskan wilderness. Hilarity (for some) ensues.

Reviews by the professionals have been lukewarm. Though many will argue it is nice to see the domestic, motherly side of Sarah in her own 'element'. Not sure how this is going to help her 2012 campaign but a little face time is all these pseudo politicians ask for, am I right?

The show airs Sunday at 9 on TLC.

Busted brides...

The tagline: "The only competition where the winner gets cut."

Just when I think I've seen it all. We all know by now I am a huge fan of reality tv, the good, the bad and the ugly.  'Bridalplasty' has to be one of the worst ones I've seen in a long time.

So here's the premise: Girls compete in challenges to win various plastic surgery procedures. The girls who handles it the best wins their dream wedding. Contestants must be away from their fiance for four months and in the end the groom doesn't see his bride until her final reveal at their wedding. Whatttt?! How is this going to work. These people have to be nuts. Who's fiance would comply to this? Didn't we learn from the failed 'Swan' that the backlash of these shows are worse than the ratings?

I'm totally disgusted by this. Surprise, surprise this show is appearing on E!, the same channel who is also showing the critcized 'documentary' style show 'What's Eating you' about people (men and women) struggling with eating disorders. The show fails to capture the seriousness of those kinds of disease like AE's 'Intervention'. The E! channel has a series of superficial reality shows that send those cliche blond, thin and void of all common sense stereotypes to young girls.

Shanna Moakler, who has had her fair share of surgery's, and is better known as the cuckoo ex-wife of Travis Barker and former Miss Universe contestant hosts. Who better to represent the effect of plastic surgery?

I hope E! seriously reconsiders this one or I hope the media's attack on the show causes E! to cancel it. What a bad example this sets for women in general.

I won't be tuning into this one.

(I kid about the title of this blog postin; but I love alliteration)

Reality meets the Recession

The premise of most reality shows are all in good fun. People are looking for love, competing for money or just being themselves (with a few directions from a script). Regular people often watch 'reality tv' to escape; I know I do. Regular people are also the ones most being impacted by the recession. Television is perhaps one of the cheapest forms of entertainment these days; so families are flocking to their TV's to choose from the pleathora of 'reality' and other musing entertainment available.

Recession based storylines have made their way into some of our favorite shows in the past couple of years. Susan on 'Desperate Housewives' has had to downsize her living accommodations and take on a second (scandalous) job for example.

Now, even reality TV is taking a look at how the recession is taking a toll on average families across the nation.

The Fairy Job Mother is based on a popular British show from the same creators as Supernanny. The show send employment expert Haley Jones to individuals who need to reevaluate the way they are presenting themselves to employers. Jones acts as a job and life coach gets individuals mentally prepared to be accountable for their lives, career and family. Jones is kind of a combination of the supernannies, Dr. Phil, Tony Robbins and Stacey and Clinton from TLC's what not to wear. The show can be seen Thursday at 9 p.m. on Lifetime.

Downsized takes on a more serious tone with the documentary style show which follows families through the recession as they downsize (for lack of a better word) their lifestyle. In one episode we see a family of 9 who is used to taking vacations, going out to dinner and spending summers in their second home adjust after their home goes into foreclosure and their contracting business folds. This one may hit a little closer to home than some of us would like; but it also helps to see others are struggling to stay afloat too during these uncertain times. Downsized can be seen Saturday's at 9 p.m. on the WE channel.

My favorite character this season: Julia Stiles

Most of us know and love Julia Stiles from the 2001 teen flick 'Save the Last Dance'
Stiles has come a long way since her early teenage roles.

I was pleasantly surprised to to see Stiles pop up on Dexter this season as the tortured but strong-willed Lumen Pierce. Dexter fans are always left pondering what other twists and turns can make our palms sweat each season.

Last season's Trinity killer seemed to be the Holy Grail of serial killers. Rita's death shook viewers to the core and left us wondering how will Dexter cope with this one? He is so void of emotion and now he has a young baby and so many deep, dark secrets to grapple with.

At first I thought Lumen was just another character who manages to get in Dexter's way. Little did we know she has an agenda of her own. Dexter and Lumen are teaming up and this can only spell trouble. Dexter is letting Lumen in and even introducing him to Harrison. They are killing together and working as a calculated, evidence free duo seeking justice and revenge.

I like it; but Lumen is a mortal. She is possessed by rage and merely wants revenge on the men who hurt her. What happens when Dexter continues on after Lumen's men are done?

I really hope Julia gets a Emmy nod for her role. It is so much different than any other character she has played. How genius is it for the writers to team Dexter up with someone who feels the same motivation to kill as Dexter?

I don't want to Skate with the Stars...

As Seth and Amy from Saturday Night Live used to say, really....really ABC, 'Skating with the Stars'?

Yes, they are doing it again. The FOX network brought us the dangerous reality show 'Skating with Celebrities' back in 2006, once. It didn't exactly take off.

With the success of 'Dancing With the Stars' ABC has decided to capitalize on the success by bringing us skating with the celebrities. These celebs must really desire some face time and they better have their doctors and plastic surgeons clear their schedules.

Here's the mediocre lineup:
Bethenny Frankel, Real Housewive of New York City and Bravo's Bethenny Getting Married.
Vince Neil, Motley Crue frontman
Jonny Moseley, Olympic skier
Sean Young, actress best known for her role in Bladerunner
Rebecca Budig, Greenlee from All My Children and recently divorced from Bachelor star Bob Guiney
Brandon Mychal Smith, actor known for his role on Phil of the Future

The show will premiere Nov. 22.
