Conan O'Brien looks like he's been through hell. He has been through the network ringer. The unshaven, untucked and slightly unforgiving O'Brien appeared on 60 Minutes last night with Steve Kroft. Conan's payoff from NBC forbade him from giving interviews that would appear prior to May 1. So, of course CBS schedules the interview to appear May 2. Zing!
Kroft didn't hold back and Conan was receptive to most of his observations and questions. Coco compared his split from NBC to a marriage breaking up and said NBC 'broke his heart.' Conan's wife, Liza, admitted to Kroft that it was hard to watch.
O'Brien made a cool $32 million for exiting the Tonight Show post; but its easy to get a sense that any amount of money wouldn't make the situation easier to swallow. He calls his relationship with NBC 'toxic.' However, he tried to stay cool when Kroft dared to ask if Conan thought he got screwed. He simply said, 'No, I didn't. I'm fine.' (who wants to bet that was hard to say)
In a word, he calls it 'incomprehensible.'
Although Jay Leno appeared on Oprah back in January, I think Conan got the final word on this matter with his primetime appearance. Conan also admitted he has yet to hear from Jay. Jay told Oprah he would talk to Conan after things had quieted down. (What would Jay say anyway. Sorry I took my job back and got you dumped from the network even though I said I was leaving and gave you my job.)
Conan's not dummy (He's a Harvard grad). And he's taking this all in stride the best he knows how by selling out a 40 city comedy tour around the U.S. including one at Mohegan Sun in June. Rumor is tickets are hard to come by.
Go Coco!
